The Kimono

A little girl in a mini kimono at the Meiji Shrine

Walking through Tokyo, a woman in a kimono will occasionally walk past and it’s such a pleasure to see. Seeing this traditional dress stand out amongst a rush of people in contemporary clothes is a beautiful sight. It’s as if time has stood still for a few moments.

I thought I’d spotted some actual geishas when walking through Asakusa. Lucky me to see such a rare sight! But no, it turns out these girls had paid to dress up as them and take photos of each other. Geishas are so rare now and it’s unusual to see any in Tokyo. There are only around 1000 in Japan and most reside in Kyoto. They’re like an endangered species. Geishas study for 4 to 5 years to become highly skilled in traditional singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. An evening of entertainment with one geisha is understandably not cheap- it costs at least £450 for 2 people including dinner.

Seoul dolls

I’ve always thought the girls in Seoul look like dolls. It turns out they really do aspire to look like them!

Gangnam Street Style

Rina

I’ve arrived in sunny Seoul, the city of the horse dance, sexxxy ladies and kimchi. Walking through Gangnam, you can see why Psy has written a song about it’s style. The popular Garosugil is the tree lined  street where all the cool kids hang out in nightclub-esque coffee shops and uber slick boutiques. Here are some of my fashion finds…

Around Soho…

I’m very much enjoying Sophia’s mix of textures with her leather fringed skirt, wooly jumper and studded collar. She wears a Zara skirt and blazer, Primark jumper, sunglasses and jacket and Converse trainers.

Sally looks uber cute in her tartan trousers, metallic jumper and burgundy hat. She wears trousers by ASOS, a jumper from H&M, a vintage coat, Office shoes, and a hat and bag from Urban Outfitters.

Tianci is all set for autumn in her muted tones with pops of red. She wears a coat by Zara, top by Stella McCartney, a Topshop skirt, shoes from China and bag by Alexander McQueen.

Annaleena is a film maker from Spitalfields. She wears a Jean Pierre Braganza jacket, Zara dress, 3.1 Philip Lim bag, Pied a Terre shoes and Miu Miu sunglasses.

Prints and colours

Elisa’s mix of prints, colours and bejeweled accessories makes for one eye-catching outfit. She wears a vintage jacket, top and shorts by ASOS, Sergio Rossi shoes, a Lancelot Knight bag and jewellery and sunglasses from ASOS.

Back in London…

Peggy is a fashion student and DJ. She wears a hat, trousers and bag from Zara, shoes and jumper from H&M.

Kim is a journalist from Bethnal Green. The cut out triangles of her white shirt dress give this classic item a hot, modern twist. Her dress is by Asha, her bag by Mimi, boots from ASOS and she wears a vintage belt.

Selina lightens up the street in this juicy colour combo. Her coat is from a charity shop, she can’t remember where she bought the jumpsuit (though she knows she dyed it pink) and her shoes are from Camden.

Gacomo is from Italy and has just moved to The Big Smoke. He wears a Louis Vuitton scarf and bag, H&M coat, the leather jumper was a gift from a stylist friend, Dries Van Noten trousers, a vintage hat and Church’s shoes.

Maryam gives this cute preppy look a tough twist with her leather shorts, DMs and dark shawl. She wears shorts, shawl and bag from H&M, a Warehouse shirt, an ASOS jumper and a collar by COS.
